Pharmaceuticals are among the most tightly controlled goods you can ship. Every country — including the UAE — treats medicines as a health-regulated product, not ordinary freight. That means extra permits, extra paperwork, and in many cases, temperature-controlled transport.
The rules also split sharply in two directions: personal shipments (medicines for you or your family) and commercial shipments (pharmaceutical products for sale or distribution). The requirements are completely different, so identify which one you are before anything else.
Sending personal medication from Dubai to family abroad — or carrying it for your own use — is the simpler case, but it still has rules:
Shipping medicines commercially from the UAE is a licensed activity. The key points:
If you are a business planning regular pharma exports, sort out licensing before you promise delivery dates to customers — registration processes take time.
Many medicines — insulin, vaccines, biologics, certain eye drops — must stay within a strict temperature range, typically 2–8°C for refrigerated products. Break the cold chain and the medicine may be useless, even if it looks fine.
1. Talk to your forwarder early. Mention “pharmaceuticals” in your first enquiry, not at the warehouse. Pharma cargo changes the booking, the packaging, and sometimes the routing.
2. Get paperwork in order first. Prescriptions, permits, and product registrations should be confirmed before the shipment is packed — not chased while it sits at the airport.
3. Insure it properly. Medicines are high-value and sensitive; standard cargo cover may not be enough. Ask specifically about pharma-appropriate insurance.
4. Never hide what it is. Misdeclaring medicines as “general goods” to dodge paperwork is the fastest way to get a shipment seized and face penalties.
Can I send prescription medicine to family abroad from Dubai?
Usually yes, in personal quantities, with a copy of the prescription and in original packaging — but always check the destination country’s rules for that specific medicine first.
Do I need a permit to export medicines commercially from Dubai?
Yes. Commercial pharma trade requires proper licensing (MOHAP/DHA framework in the UAE) and the destination country’s import approvals.
How are temperature-sensitive medicines shipped?
In validated insulated packaging with coolant packs and temperature data loggers, handled as cold-chain cargo with priority movement through transit points.
Can medicines go by sea freight?
For large commercial volumes, yes — in refrigerated (reefer) containers. For personal or urgent shipments, air freight is the practical choice.
