Furniture is bulky, heavy and awkward — exactly the combination that suffers most in transit. A container from Jebel Ali can spend weeks at sea, get shifted by cranes at two or three ports, and sit in serious heat. Good packing is the difference between furniture that arrives ready to use and furniture that arrives as firewood. Here is how professionals do it.
Remove legs, detach headboards, take apart sectional sofas and flat-pack what was designed to flat-pack. Disassembly cuts volume (which cuts sea freight cost on LCL and air freight volumetric charges) and removes the leverage points where damage starts. Before you touch a screwdriver: photograph each piece assembled, put screws and bolts in labelled zip bags taped to the part they came from, and keep assembly instructions with the bags. Your future self will thank you.
Layer in that order: padding against the furniture, rigid protection outside, stretch film to lock it all down.
For antiques, marble tops, glass display cabinets and artwork-grade pieces, wrapping is not enough — build or commission a custom wooden crate with internal bracing so the item cannot move at all. Line the crate with foam, mark it “FRAGILE” and “THIS SIDE UP”, and note the crate’s dimensions for your forwarder: crated goods are measured on the crate’s outside, which affects your freight calculation.
Sofas: remove legs and cushions; wrap the frame in blankets then stretch film; pack cushions separately in large poly bags (they compress well). Never stand a sofa on its arm — frames are not built for it.
Beds: dismantle the frame completely; wrap the headboard (usually the most decorative and damage-prone part) in bubble wrap plus a blanket; bag the mattress individually and keep it flat — never folded.
Dining tables: remove legs and wrap them together; protect the tabletop with a blanket and a rigid corrugated or plywood sheet on top; glass tops should travel vertically in a crate, never flat under load.
Containers sitting at Jebel Ali or in transshipment ports can get extremely hot inside. Leather can dry and crack, veneers can lift, and electronics in wooden cabinets suffer. For valuable pieces, consider moisture-absorbing desiccant sachets inside the wrapping, and avoid packing anything damp — sealed moisture becomes mould on a three-week voyage.
Should I disassemble IKEA-style furniture before shipping?
Yes — it was designed for it. Keep every fixing in labelled bags and photograph each stage; reassembly abroad is far easier that way.
How do I protect a glass tabletop?
Wrap in bubble wrap, add foam edge protectors, then crate it vertically with internal bracing. Never lay heavy items on top of glass.
Can movers pack my furniture for me?
Yes — professional packing is a standard add-on service, and it is worth it for valuable or antique pieces where a packing mistake is expensive.
Does furniture go by sea or air?
Almost always sea (FCL or LCL) — furniture’s volume makes air freight prohibitively expensive except for small, urgent items.
