You don’t need a full container to ship by sea. Consolidated shipping — also called groupage or LCL (less than container load) — lets your cargo share a container with other shippers’ goods heading to the same destination. You pay only for the space you use, which makes sea freight affordable for small businesses, online sellers and personal shippers.
In a full container load (FCL), one shipper rents the entire box. In a consolidated shipment, a consolidator combines many smaller consignments into one container. Each shipper’s cargo is documented, labeled and separated inside the shared box, and each pays only for their portion. It is the standard way the world’s small and mid-size cargo moves by sea.
1. Quote and booking. You provide dimensions, weight and destination; the consolidator quotes a per-CBM rate and sailing schedule.
2. Cargo to the warehouse. You deliver your goods to the consolidation warehouse in Dubai (or arrange a pickup).
3. Measuring, weighing and documentation. Your cargo is measured and weighed, and the paperwork — commercial invoice, packing list — is checked.
4. Consolidation and loading. Your goods are packed into a shared container alongside other shippers’ cargo, properly separated and secured.
5. Ocean transit. The container sails on its scheduled service from Jebel Ali.
6. Deconsolidation. At the destination port, the container is unpacked at a container freight station (CFS) and each consignment is separated.
7. Clearance and final delivery. Your goods clear customs and are delivered to you or made available for collection.
Consolidated freight is priced per cubic metre (CBM) — or per 1,000 kg, whichever gives the greater figure (known as weight-or-measurement, W/M). Two things to know: most consolidators apply a minimum chargeable volume (often 1 CBM), so a tiny half-CBM box still pays the 1 CBM rate; and there is a per-shipment origin handling and documentation charge on top of the per-CBM freight. That is why getting an itemized quote matters — the per-CBM rate alone is never the whole story.
Shared containers sail on fixed schedules, and the consolidator waits until there is enough cargo to fill the box economically. That waiting time, plus the extra handling at both ends (packing at origin, unpacking at destination), typically adds several days to about a week compared with a dedicated container on the same sailing. If your cargo is genuinely urgent, air freight — or a full container — will be faster.
As a rough rule of thumb, once your cargo approaches a full container’s worth of volume, FCL usually becomes cheaper per unit than paying per-CBM — a good forwarder will tell you honestly when you’ve crossed that line.
How is consolidated shipping priced from Dubai?
Per CBM (or per 1,000 kg, whichever is greater), plus per-shipment handling and documentation charges. Rates vary by destination — ask for an itemized quote.
How long does it take?
Ocean transit plus consolidation waiting time and deconsolidation at destination — typically several days longer than a dedicated container on the same route.
Is my cargo safe sharing a container?
Yes, when packed properly. Goods are separated, labeled and secured; pack fragile items well since shared containers see more handling.
What is the minimum shipment size?
There is usually no strict minimum, but a minimum chargeable volume (often 1 CBM) applies — below that you still pay the 1 CBM rate.
