Exporting for the first time feels complicated because transport, documents, customs, and coordination with the destination all happen at once. But the process follows the same sequence every time. Here is the full journey, step by step.
Before asking for quotes, know your basics: what the goods are, how many cartons, total weight and dimensions, pickup location in Dubai, and the destination city and country. Forwarders cannot quote without these — “some boxes to Saudi” gets you a guess, not a price.
GCC destination? Road freight is usually fastest and cheapest. Heavy goods going worldwide? Sea freight from Jebel Ali. Urgent or high-value? Air freight via DXB or DWC. If unsure, ask two forwarders what they recommend for your cargo — and why.
Checklist for choosing:
The core set for most exports from Dubai:
Prepare these before the cargo is packed — documents drive everything downstream.
Export packing must survive forklifts, container stacking, and possibly rough handling at transshipment ports. Use sturdy cartons or crates, palletise where possible, and mark every package with shipper, consignee, destination, and carton numbers matching your packing list.
Goods leaving the UAE need an export declaration filed through Mirsal 2 (Dubai Customs’ system, via Dubai Trade) — your forwarder or broker normally files this from your invoice and packing list.
Your forwarder collects the goods (or you deliver to their warehouse). For air freight, the cargo goes through security screening at the airport. For sea freight, it is loaded into a container — possibly consolidated with other shippers’ goods (LCL) — and delivered to Jebel Ali Port. For road freight, it is loaded onto the truck heading for the border.
Once the cargo is on its way, you receive the key document: the bill of lading (sea/road) or air waybill (air). This is your proof of shipment and, for sea freight, your document of title. Check that names, quantities, and the destination match your invoice before accepting it.
Your consignee (or their broker) clears the goods at destination using the invoice, packing list, transport document, and any required import permits. Stay in touch with your forwarder here — most delays happen at this stage, not in Dubai.
Confirm the consignee received everything in good condition, settle any remaining destination charges, and file your documents. If anything arrived damaged, note it immediately — claims get harder with every passing day.
Do I need a trade licence to export from Dubai?
Commercial exports are normally made under a valid UAE trade licence. Individuals shipping personal effects use a different (simpler) process — tell your forwarder which case you are.
How long does the whole export process take?
The Dubai-side process typically takes a few days once documents are ready; total door-to-door time depends on the mode and destination.
What are Incoterms and do I need them?
Incoterms (like EXW, FOB, CIF, DDP) are standard codes defining who pays for what and where risk transfers. Agree them with your buyer upfront — they go on your commercial invoice.
Can one forwarder handle everything door-to-door?
Yes — a full-service forwarder manages pickup, export clearance, international transport, and destination delivery coordination. For a first export, this is strongly recommended over splitting the job.
