Incoterms Explained: EXW, FOB, CIF, DDP for Dubai Shippers

Incoterms Explained EXW, FOB, CIF, DDP for Dubai Shippers

What Incoterms Are (and Why They Matter)

Incoterms are the International Chamber of Commerce’s standard trade terms — three-letter codes (current version: Incoterms 2020) defining who pays for what and, crucially, where risk transfers from seller to buyer. Every Dubai exporter should know at least the four below.

EXW — Ex Works: The Buyer Does Everything

With EXW, the seller’s job ends at their own premises — say, a warehouse in Al Quoz. The buyer arranges export clearance, transport to Jebel Ali, ocean freight, insurance, import clearance and delivery. Risk transfers the moment the goods are made available at the seller’s door, before they are even loaded.

EXW suits buyers with their own UAE forwarder. The trap: if the buyer fails to complete UAE export clearance properly, the goods get stuck — with the seller’s name on the export paperwork.

FOB — Free on Board: The Classic Sea-Freight Term

FOB is the workhorse of container shipping from Jebel Ali. The seller handles export clearance and delivers the goods on board the vessel. At that exact point — goods on board — both cost and risk transfer to the buyer, who pays the ocean freight, insurance and everything after.

FOB suits experienced exporters: you control everything up to loading — the part you can supervise — while the buyer handles import in a market they know.

CIF — Cost, Insurance and Freight: The Misunderstood One

Under CIF, the seller pays the ocean freight and arranges minimum marine insurance all the way to the destination port. Here is the part most people get wrong: risk still transfers when the goods are loaded on board at Jebel Ali — exactly like FOB. The seller is paying for freight and insurance, but if the container is damaged mid-voyage, it is the buyer’s insurance claim to make, not the seller’s loss.

CIF is popular because buyers like one all-in price. Remember: paying for the voyage is not the same as bearing its risk.

DDP — Delivered Duty Paid: Maximum Seller Responsibility

DDP is the full-service term: the seller handles everything through import clearance, duties and taxes, delivering to the buyer’s door. Risk transfers only on delivery. It is simplest for the buyer — and heaviest for the seller, who must master foreign customs rules, from Saudi SABER certification to EU EORI numbers.

Dubai e-commerce sellers use DDP most — the buyer simply receives the goods with no customs hassle.

Which Terms Dubai SMEs Use Most

  • FOB Jebel Ali — the default for established SME exporters. You control export clearance and loading; the buyer handles their own import.
  • CIF destination port — common when competing for new buyers who want simplicity, especially in Africa and South Asia.
  • DDP — growing fast with e-commerce and Amazon-style sellers who need a frictionless buyer experience.
  • EXW Dubai — used when large overseas buyers insist on using their own contracted forwarders.

The Costly Mistake: Thinking CIF Protects You at Sea

The most expensive Incoterms misunderstanding we see: a seller ships CIF, the container suffers water damage, and the seller assumes “I paid the insurance, so I am covered.” Wrong — under CIF, risk transferred at loading. That insurance exists for the buyer’s benefit, at minimum cover. Sellers wanting real protection need their own contingency insurance. One misunderstood clause can mean a five-figure argument.

FAQs

Which Incoterm is best for a new Dubai exporter?
FOB Jebel Ali is the safest starting point — you control everything you can see (packing, export clearance, loading), and the buyer handles import in a market they understand.

Does CIF include import customs clearance?
No. CIF covers cost, insurance and freight to the destination port. Import clearance, duties and onward delivery are the buyer’s — that would be DDP.

Can I use FOB for air freight?
Technically the term exists, but FOB is designed for sea freight. For air cargo, the equivalent concept is FCA (Free Carrier) — using sea terms for air shipments is a classic exam-trap mistake.

Who files the export declaration from Dubai under EXW?
In principle the buyer — but UAE export filings (Dubai Trade / Mirsal 2) practically need local involvement, so confirm in writing who handles it.
