Every trackable sea shipment has two key identifiers. The bill of lading (BL) number (e.g. MAEU123456789) identifies your booking with the shipping line, and the container number (four letters + seven digits, e.g. MSKU 482913-5) identifies the physical box. Your forwarder should give you both as soon as the container is loaded.
For carrier-direct tracking, go to the shipping line’s website — Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd and COSCO all have track-and-trace pages where you enter either number. For air freight, use the air waybill (AWB) number on the airline’s cargo tracking page. For land freight to GCC destinations, tracking is usually milestone-based through your forwarder rather than a live map — trucks do not broadcast GPS to customers the way vessels do.
A good forwarder does not make you ask. Expect proactive updates at each of these stages:
| Milestone | What it means |
|---|---|
| Empty container released / loaded | The container was picked up and your goods were stuffed and sealed at origin. |
| Gate-in at Jebel Ali | The container entered the port terminal and is queued for its vessel. |
| Loaded on vessel | Your container is physically on the ship. This is when the voyage truly starts. |
| Departed | The vessel left Jebel Ali. The carrier’s estimated arrival date starts counting from here. |
| Transshipment | The container is being moved from one vessel to another at a hub port (e.g. Singapore, Colombo, Algeciras). |
| Arrived at destination | The vessel berthed at the destination port. Clearance and delivery still to come. |
| Customs released | Customs formalities are complete and the cargo can leave the port. |
| Out for delivery / delivered | The container or goods are on the truck to the consignee / handed over. |
“Loaded on vessel” vs “Departed”: a container can sit on a berthed ship for a day or two before sailing. “Departed” is the meaningful date — measure your transit time from there.
“Transshipment”: this is normal, not a problem. Most Jebel Ali cargo bound for Europe, the Americas or East Asia changes vessels at least once. Allow 3–7 days per transshipment in your planning; connections are where most schedule slips happen.
“Arrived”: does not mean ready for collection. The container still needs to be discharged, customs-cleared and released — typically another 2–5 working days at an efficient port, longer if documents are incomplete.
“Customs hold” / “On hold”: the container has been flagged for inspection or a document query. Your clearing agent — not the shipping line — is the person who resolves this.
No update for a week on a sea shipment is usually fine; no update for three weeks is not. Work through this checklist:
How long before my shipment shows up in tracking?
Typically 24–48 hours after gate-in at Jebel Ali. If nothing appears after 3 working days, ask your forwarder to confirm the BL number was issued correctly.
Why does tracking show my container going the “wrong” way?
Transshipment routings often look odd — e.g. Dubai cargo for East Africa routed via Salalah or Colombo. Trust the carrier’s stated final destination, not the map.
Can I track land freight to Saudi Arabia or Oman?
Usually via milestone updates from your forwarder (loaded, border crossed, arrived) rather than live GPS. Ask for the driver’s contact or the transport company’s tracking link if you need tighter visibility.
Who do I call if my cargo is stuck in customs?
Your destination clearing agent first — they can see the exact hold reason in the customs system. Your forwarder coordinates, but the agent on the ground resolves it.
